How it works

Isotropic elasticity has only two independent constants — E, G, K and ν are all interlinked. G governs shear distortion (torsion of shafts, shear deflection of deep beams); K governs volume change under pressure. As ν → 0.5, K blows up to infinity (incompressible) while G stays finite — exactly rubber's behaviour.

Worked example

Steel with E = 200 GPa and ν = 0.30: G = 200/(2·1.3) = 76.9 GPa and K = 200/(3·0.4) = 166.7 GPa. Torsion and shear-deflection problems use G, not E.
